Welcome!

Hi—and welcome to my blog! My name is Ann. I live in Ohio with my husband Tim, our daughters Lucy (6) and Alice (3), our sons Calvin (2) and Peter (newborn), and our two dogs Pierre and Harper. I love being a mom! Before I had my kids, I used to hear people say how much they love being a mom and that it was their greatest accomplishment. I didn't quite understand until I became a mom myself. My life as a mom is messy, stressful, crazy and oftentimes completely maddening. But man... it's the best life in the world. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Our three-year-old daughter Alice rocks an extra chromosome (aka: she has Down syndrome!). A lot of this blog centers around her and our journey with Down syndrome. It was an unexpected ride, but man do we love our tour guide! I love sharing positive, accurate information about Down syndrome with all of you in order to change perceptions. Alice is amazing and perfectly created by God and she will do anything she wants...

My interview with Students for Life

A few days ago, someone from Students for Life contacted me and asked me to be interviewed for their publications. I was happy to do it, as the Down syndrome abortion statistics are sky high and for no good reason. People are making this decision based on outdated stereotypes and pressure from their doctors. By sharing the beauty of our kids with Down syndrome, we can shed the stigma and bring more chromosomally-enhanced kids into the world. Trying to create one type of person in our world is eugenics. Dear new mom and dad...

When Alice was born, the doctor told me that "unfortunately" she has Down syndrome and that she was "so sorry." She told me that Alice wouldn't do much in life. She told me that her features were very heavily Down syndrome and she didn't look like us. What if, instead of saying all of that, she told me the truth? What if she told me that things would be OK and that this would become our biggest blessing? What if she told me that she had big blue eyes like Tim and Lucy? What if she told me about all of the opportunities available for people with Down syndrome today? What if she showed me these pictures of a happy, normal family living a happy, normal life with their child with Down syndrome? That's my goal. I wrote this letter to new parents of a child with Down syndrome. I would have done anything to receive this when Alice was born.
