Welcome!

Hi—and welcome to my blog! My name is Ann. I live in Ohio with my husband Tim, our daughters Lucy (6) and Alice (3), our sons Calvin (2) and Peter (newborn), and our two dogs Pierre and Harper. I love being a mom! Before I had my kids, I used to hear people say how much they love being a mom and that it was their greatest accomplishment. I didn't quite understand until I became a mom myself. My life as a mom is messy, stressful, crazy and oftentimes completely maddening. But man... it's the best life in the world. I wouldn't trade it for anything. Our three-year-old daughter Alice rocks an extra chromosome (aka: she has Down syndrome!). A lot of this blog centers around her and our journey with Down syndrome. It was an unexpected ride, but man do we love our tour guide! I love sharing positive, accurate information about Down syndrome with all of you in order to change perceptions. Alice is amazing and perfectly created by God and she will do anything she wants

Alice: Welcome to Wonderland

My entire life, I've noticed people who have kids with disabilities. There were a couple families at church when I was growing up who had children with different special needs: spina bifida, cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome... the list goes on and on. I saw these families in many public places a lot too. And every single time I saw a family like that, I thought, "That will never happen to me. I couldn't handle it and God knows that." When Lucy was born perfectly healthy and typical, I thanked God that she had no abnormalities and I thought, “There’s a reason she was born perfectly normal. I couldn’t handle anything being wrong—and God knows that.” --- Our beautiful daughter Alice Dorothy was born on March 17, 2018. When I was pregnant with her, we had our routine 20-week ultrasound where the doctor can tell the gender. We didn’t want to know. We wanted to be surprised at her birth, just like we were with Lucy. Dear new mom and dad...

When Alice was born, the doctor told me that "unfortunately" she has Down syndrome and that she was "so sorry." She told me that Alice wouldn't do much in life. She told me that her features were very heavily Down syndrome and she didn't look like us. What if, instead of saying all of that, she told me the truth? What if she told me that things would be OK and that this would become our biggest blessing? What if she told me that she had big blue eyes like Tim and Lucy? What if she told me about all of the opportunities available for people with Down syndrome today? What if she showed me these pictures of a happy, normal family living a happy, normal life with their child with Down syndrome? That's my goal. I wrote this letter to new parents of a child with Down syndrome. I would have done anything to receive this when Alice was born. My next step is to send this to Down syndrome associations, hospitals and ob/gyn offices across the country t
